Instructions for Case Studies

2009 March 24

If you have reached this page, you are likely infected with The NERD. That’s OK. The NERD infection is nothing to be ashamed of. Millions of normal people who have done nothing “wrong” are infected every year. It’s a virulent disease which infects people from all walks of life and all racial backgrounds. You may be a victim, but you are not alone.

What I need from you is your story. I need to know exactly how your infection occurred and what symptoms you are experiencing. To fully understand the behavior of this pathogen I need to document every case I can. So please follow these instructions as best you can:

  1. Write about your particular infection. Any information you can provide of your own particular case is helpful. For example, you could write a blog post which anecdotally explains a moment your symptoms occurred or your general pathology of nerdiness. It can be short or long and about anything – remember, symptoms are highly varied. If you need help identifying symptoms, please see our symptoms page.
  2. Submit your case study via this form. Your case study will appear on this site when the next batch is published.
  3. Stand up for yourself and your disease and put one of the support or infected buttons on your page. You really have nothing to be ashamed of, and the more people learn about this disease, the better.
  4. If there’s someone in your life who you think is infected, let them know that you love and support them. Tell them about this place where they can learn more about their own infection and how the disease has affected others. Encourage them to undergo a self-exam to determine if they’ve been infected.

Remember, the information you provide will help medical professionals better understand the nature of the disease and provide others with examples of what infections look like. If you have any questions, suggestions, or ideas, you can e-mail the medical team at NERDinfection [at] gmail [dot] com. The more information we can gather, the more we will learn about this misunderstood pathogen that is spreading throughout the human population. Thank you for doing your part!

Hey Christie, thanks for letting me know about this support group. As you know, in my case, it’s sorely needed.

Just one thing–and this seems often to be a problem with wordpress blogs–is that I can’t get this blog title to register in my google feed. It comes up on the list of blogs as “undefined”. The same thing happens with Jerry Coyne’s blog, Why Evolution is True. So I now have two blogs I can’t differentiate from each other, which is getting a bit messy.

I don’t know what the solution is. I do notice, however, that in the title bar at the top of my browser when I’m on your home page, the blog title doesn’t appear. Instead it says “Mozilla Firefox”, the browser I use. I have a suspicion that might be related to the problem….

    Anyway,

    Happy Nerdiness!

    Cheers,

    Margaret
